San Francisco is located in the state of California at the tip of San Francisco Peninsula. This city has stretches of the Pacific Ocean included as well as some islands. One famous island that is included in the boundaries of San Francisco is Alcatraz. Alcatraz, also known as Alcatraz Island or The Rock was originally used as a lighthouse. The island itself sits in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. This site was used as a Federal Prison from 1934 until 1963. This prison is one of the only ones that have not successfully had any escapes. There were 14 attempts to escape from this prison. One attempt even came close but the escapees were reported to have drowned in the bay after escaping the prison. In 1972 Alcatraz became a recreation area open to the public. Alcatraz has been featured in many forms of the media. People can visit Alcatraz by taking a short ferry ride to the pier. Other islands that sit on the boundaries of San Francisco are Angel Island, Treasure Island, Yerba Buena Island, Alameda Island, and Red Rock Island.

San Francisco is comprised of many hills. There are as many as 50 hills in the city which have names. Mount Davidson is known as one of San Francisco’s tallest hills. A radio and television tower called Sutro Tower is located on Davidson Hill. There are minor earthquakes in the city due to the San Andreas and Hayward faults running through the city.

San Francisco has a Mediterranean climate. The city is known to have mild yet wet winters and very dry summers. The Pacific Ocean has a lot of impact on the weather of this city. May through October is known as the dry season in San Francisco. November Through April is known as the rainy period. Depending on the month temperatures in the city can range from 46 degrees Fahrenheit during the rainy months to over 75 degrees in other months of the year.

San Francisco is a large tourist town and is known for its high standard of living, its culture and neighborhoods, street cars, and famous landmarks and attractions such as the San Francisco Bay Bridge and Alcatraz.
