San Francisco is one of the cities that are striving to make the whole city green. This city has made many strides in the green movement and to improve the environment for the entire population of the city. One of the small steps that have made a big impact on the landfills of the city is that the city has banned all plastic bag distribution since 2007. In certain cases single serve water bottles have been banned around the city and at events. The city has also strived to reduce its carbon footprint in many other ways. In 2007 plastic containers were banned from all restaurants in the city. Also, over 70% of the population actively participates in recycling. The goal for the city is to have zero waste by the year 2020.

San Francisco is also very strong in the green building movement. In June of 2008 legislation was passed that implemented a ten year solar rebate program for residences, businesses, and non-profit organizations. Buildings in the city have been given a rating in the “green leaf” system. Solar panels are being used where applicable around the city. The AT&T scoreboard is comprised of solar panels, as well as the convention center and many hotels and restaurants around the city. The local tours such as, Green Journey’s, travel to places like Fisherman’s Wharf, North Beach, Pacific Heights and other locations to help to get the word out about the strong participation of the green movement by San Francisco.

San Francisco has also put a big importance on hybrid cars. The city has implemented hybrid taxies to carry residents and tourists to their destinations.

San Francisco has also won many awards for its participation in the green movement. The Hilton Sonoma Wine Country was awarded the 2009 Environmental award for its best practices. The Fairmont Sonoma Inn has introduced worm composting. SMG and Moscone Center have been awarded the Environmental Achievement award for their buildings.

This city seems to be ahead of the rest in improving the environment. Each day San Francisco takes a new step toward being pollution free.
